CERN60 celebration organised by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Wigner Research Centre for Physics

A CERN60 celebration organised by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Wigner Research Centre for Physics was held at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest on 27 May 2014 (see the attached invitation). It attracted a large audience of physicists, university students and teachers accompanying high school children from Budapest and elsewhere. (See also http://wigner.mta.hu/node/842).

The programme was as follows:

1 p.m.: Opening of the travelling exhibition All Colours of Physics.

The exhibition is a huge bus whose opening end serves as a platform. It was opened by Rolf-Dieter Heuer, Director-General of CERN; Péter Lévai, Director-General of the Wigner Research Centre for Physics; Jenő Sólyom, President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Section of Physical Sciences; László Korányi, President of the Hungarian CERN Committee; István Groma, Deputy Dean of Eötvös Loránd University; and Jenő Kürti, Secretary-General of Hungary’s Roland Eötvös Physical Society. The bus is scheduled to visit primary schools and high schools throughout Hungary, where researchers from the Wigner Research Centre will give lectures and present the exhibition in the hope of sparking an interest in natural sciences among the children.

2 p.m.: Lecture by Rolf-Dieter Heuer: "What the discovery of the Higgs-Boson tells us about physics, mankind and the universe".

The talk was given in English while the slide presentation was projected in both Hungarian and English. The auditorium, one of Eötvös Loránd University’s largest, was so full that people were even sitting on the floor and standing around the edges.

60 more years of science for peace: carrying the message forward

At the end of 2013, we were just about to embark on a year of celebrations marking 60 years of science for peace at CERN. Our message was that science is an inescapable driver of peaceful relations among cultures and nations, a force for sustainability and a necessity in confronting the major challenges facing society today. Twelve months on, we can safely say that we’ve been successful in delivering that message.
